The Conscious Designer
'Living Lab', Sessions & Solutions
What Is 'The Conscious Designer' Path?
Most design processes start with a brief, a market, a consumer opportunity to optimise around. The Designer Path starts somewhere different - with the questions of 'What design is actually doing to people?' and 'What it could do instead?'.
The Designer Path works as a guided journey through a 'Living Lab': an action-led design process where you take a real problem or potential product / service idea (a 'lab') - either from a given template or your own - and learn to see it, feel it, and solve it from a place of genuine human vitality rather than behavioural manipulation or unconscious extraction.
Whilst it follows a five-stage conscious design process (See, Sense, Spin, Shape, Spread) that will take you from an conditioned designer (or unconscious consumer) to a conscious one (who is able to ideate, empathise, and future-think around human needs), like the name suggests, the process is fluid and can see needs and solutions adapt over time, so a 'living lab' can be returned to again and again as needed, or a new 'lab' can be explored instead.

The Designer Path Framework
1 - See
Understanding and challenging our consumed mind
We start by looking at the evolution of design psychology to understand why and how people have become reactive consumers to what is around them - not just to products, but as products. We see how unconscious design has affected us in different ways, and start prompting questions like 'How is this product/service both serving and hindering?'.
Once we are focused on looking at how the design of products, services, systems etc. can affect us and society, we start our own 'Living Lab' by selecting a 'template problem' (or potential idea) to focus on - or use our own. We then scrutinise this in the same way.
By seeing beneath the surface with 'conscious designer' eyes, we learn to release ego from the design process entirely. We challenge conventional patterns and outdated systems, letting go of what we assume the solution should be. We consider what's just comfort-led, market-expected, or impressive-looking, versus what's actually needed? What would we design if we let go of this and looked from a different perspective?
2 - Sense
Caring about genuine impact now and for the future
When the head quietens and the unconscious assumptions or material expectations fall away, something else arrives - a genuine sense of what people actually need.
Conscious design isn't just analytical - it's empathetic at a deep level. This stage takes you into the lived experience of the people affected by your chosen 'lab', creating space to consider what serves a real human need rather than an engineered or optimised one.
Here we may find we naturally align to what calls to us too (our Ikigai), and start using tools like AI more consciously - not to churn out more 'slosh' to consume attention, but to help us genuinely consider and solve problems better.
Forward-thinking enters here too: if this problem continues unchecked for ten, twenty years - what does that world look like? How is this person affected in the long-term? Visualising the future consequence of inaction is one of the most powerful tools a conscious designer has.
3 - Spin
Generating possibilities that become human-led solutions
After sensing, we are now operating from a conscious rather than conditioned place (from expansion rather than extraction), and it becomes natural to want to build something new or different, and solve 'wicked' problems.
Here we utilise 'diamond thinking' to first 'open up' - by cultivating a forward-thinking mindset to ideate beyond what already exists, and generate potential solutions through adaptive thinking, creative problem-solving techniques, and healthy disruption.
We then 'filter down'. After 'spinning ideas around the washing machine' we see what holds - by 'whitespacing' (letting ideas sit), targeting a specific area or space to hone in on, and with 'conscious clarifying' to ensure ideas align to intention, values, and need (i.e. Does this still align to a human need? Or create another problem? What will people be doing, feeling, becoming? What will benefit people in a fast-changing world? etc.).
4 - Shape
Personalising a specific, conscious, tangible solution
This is where the idea starts taking real form and direction - what it does, who it serves, how it restores rather than drains, and what it asks of the people who use it etc.
We take our concept that has formed over the previous stages and apply it towards targeting a specific need. The aim is to solve a real, specific pain point - or a defined future opportunity - for a specific person or audience, not 'everyone'.
We then challenge ourselves to 10x the solution (even when that feels impossible or impractical at first), by making it more resourceful, viable, or personalised (not in the algorithmic sense of "we know what you clicked so here's more of it", but in intent), with our aim to genuinely fit and restore the person.
5 - Spread
Bringing it to the world, iterating again and again
A solution that stays in a notebook changes nothing. We’ve envisioned, designed, and refined - now it’s time to bring our idea to life. Here we start sharing it, testing it, prototyping it, strategising it, finding others who feel its pull - allowing our 'lab' to grow into a real possibility as a living, evolving system with conscious momentum.
Conscious design is always forward-thinking. It looks ahead, anticipates what changes as humans and contexts evolve, and builds in the capacity to adapt before problems compound. Not reactive - "we'll fix it when it breaks", but proactive and preventative - "we're already seeing what comes next.", by continuing to envision where it goes, who it reaches, and what it makes possible.
For those whose Lab solution is ready to become something real, and who want help getting there, this is where the path connects to working directly with Richly to develop it further.
You can go through The Conscious Designer Path independently, but to get the full benefit of conscious thinking, and not come from an 'optimise the consumer' first assumption, it helps to have gone through The Conscious Seeker Path before.
